What are dental veneers?

At Extreme Dentistry, we provide a variety of cosmetic treatments to improve the appearance of your smile. Veneers are incredibly popular not only because of their flawless natural-looking results but also because of their incredible convenience. They are strong and hassle-free.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are essentially thin shells, similar to a fingernail, that are custom made to fit on the front of your teeth. Your dentist will grind down the enamel on the front of your teeth then the veneers are attached. This way they fit perfectly and are not noticeable.

Veneers are a great option for concealing:

  • Gaps
  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Discolouration
  • Damaged teeth
  • Crooked or misaligned teeth

They are incredibly versatile and strong. Porcelain veneers do require multiple appointments with the dentist to prepare and design the veneers.

Types of Veneers

There are different types of veneers available depending on your price range and what you want.

Porcelain Veneers: Made using porcelain these veneers are extremely stain resistant and mimic teeth most effectively. Since porcelain veneers are usually fabricated at a dental laboratory, the veneering process requires a few visits to the dentist

Resin Veneers: Unlike porcelain veneers, it is possible to place composite veneers in a single visit to the dentist. The preparation process is similar in terms of having to remove a thin layer of enamel. The dentist then applies a thin coat of resin, shapes it, and hardens it with a high-intensity light. The final step is for the resin to be polished so they are bright.

Porcelain and resin veneers are the two most common types of veneers. At Extreme Dentistry, we prefer to use porcelain due to their ability to effectively mimic real teeth and their stain resistant properties.

How long do veneers last?

Dental veneers last between 7-15 years, but this depends on how well you look after them. Keeping good dental hygiene, cleaning your teeth regularly and flossing will help the veneers stay white, and fit well.

Even though porcelain veneers resist stains, it is recommended to avoid stain-causing food such as coffee, tea and wine as best you can. Also, be aware that teeth-grinding can greatly reduce the lifespan of veneers. Teeth-grinding will wear down veneers and could encourage them to crack and break.

How much are Veneers?

The cost of veneers depends on what type of veneer you want and how many you need. Porcelain veneers cost more as they are custom made to fit your teeth; they also require multiple appointments with your dentist in order to get them fitted.

For teeth that are severely discoloured, chipped or misshapen, Extreme Dentistry porcelain veneers are perfect to bring back that perfect smile.
